All our RagaMuffin breeding cats, or their lines, have been DNA tested for the Ragdoll mutation of the HCM gene and are -/-, which means they do not carry any copy of the gene. This does not guarantee that a cat will not develop HCM, as cats can develop HCM from reasons unrelated to the Ragdoll HCM gene. However, Kaerik Rags makes sure that all their breeding cats do not carry a copy of the Ragdoll HCM gene and we also screen our cats with echocardiograms. A cat that has one copy of the Ragdoll mutation for HCM will develop HCM, though the age of onset is unknown and may not be until the cat has reached its senior years. At Kaerik Rags, we prefer to do everything we can to reduce the risks that are within our control, and while DNA testing does not eliminate the risk of HCM, it is something we believe responsible RagaMuffin breeders should do.
